So a quiet, cool hub of some sort wouldn't be out of the question. It's a paradigm shift for me tho, used to a workhorse tower. Would you recommend a different DNx flavour then, that would still be offline, but more favourable to my system?

You can use newer cards in Windows via Boot Camp, to do this you need first to install Windows using an older video card that Apple's Boot Camp drivers support.
